English 1311 is a class from The University of Texas at El Paso that is required for most of all of the majors to take. This class is not like the regular high school class that most of the time the work developed is things like: Read books, analyze poems, etc.. This class is more focused on Composition, this means how to write, what weaknesses do you have and how does weaknesses stop you to write formally or well. The main purpose of this class is to improve and learn how to compose, write and analyze while you read something.
During the semester I decided to set goals
· How to write papers at college level
· Improve my writing including grammar
· Cite properly
· Avoid Procrastination
· Read and Analyze texts
· Learn different types of formats
· Well organization
There were some goals that I successfully complete just like writing at college level. Avoid procrastination, this point particularly I learned a lot of strengths when we were told to do our first project, “Literacy Narrative” here I studied myself and I knew about my weaknesses. In the page number 6 at the “Literacy Narrative” project I clearly wrote something that I learned and helped me in all of the projects “..I know that if the best place for me to think is at the shower and the best time and place to write is at the night in my room, I could do both things and get better results.” With this quote I prove that I know what are my main weaknesses and how I can fight them. Also I learned the new format for me that was the most used in the project which was the APA format.
The goals I still do not dominate well are the grammar and the reading and analyzing texts. In the analyzing part I can say honestly say that I could not do the last project because I was not able to join all of the ideas, which also takes the hand of the reading part. The organization is something I still work with, in the project of “Rethorical Analysis” in the first draft the professor pointed at the beginning “You have some good ideas about exigence, rhetor, audience, and constraints, but some ideas seem to be in the wrong place. I have pointed out where ideas could be moved.” My classmates and the professor at the class told these kinds of comments as well.
The goal I still struggle is the citation because there are too many types of citations but I have not learned how to cite properly and how to provide the correct sources.
Through the whole semester the professor assigned a reading everyday, then write a summary and a synthesis of what we read. These readings were assigned with the purpose to see and have an idea of what we were going to do during the class. I took all of the homeworks as tools for me that helped me to improve my writing in some ways:
1-Realize how my analysis style was getting stronger, what kind of ideas I took at first and what Ideas I took now.
· Our firs reading was “The Joy Of Superman and Me.”by Sherman Alexie I wrote almost an entire essay explaining everything about the reading including examples, etc. The last reading was “Rhetorical Situations and Their Constituents” by Grant-Davie. In this journal I realize that my analysis was a little bit better and I took me some lines to describe some of the main points about the article. In this Portfolio you will find also the different journals I made. So, with this assignments including its content I learned how to captivate the main ideas and purposes.
2-I learned how to read by applying some tools that I got from one of the readings that was “Learning to Read” this is to get the point of the sentence or he text as well to maintain the context.
3-All of the journals had a purpose that was to help us to develop the coming main projects of the class.
As I mentioned in the last point during the semester we were told to do 3 different projects and all of these journals helped to understand the main concept of each project.
Literacy Narrative
Discourse Community & Researched Argument
Rethorical Analysis
Honestly I enjoyed a lot this class because it was very dynamic and participative. I learned some good attitudes when working. You have to do the work if you want to learn. You have to trust in yourself that the only thing that stops you is you, your attitude is the motor that will move you ahead and giving you the results are expected to achieve.
The reason I know that I really learned in this class is that I feel my writing style when doing any essay more mature when talking about analysis, format, structure, etc. Also the grades I got on each project were better as the went on. I guess it would be worth if I can get a extra credit but at the same time I am not able to receive it because I am missing the last project which I had incomplete.
